How check-ins and releases work

Lastkey uses a server-authoritative 3-strike engine to reduce false triggers while still providing a clear release path.

The 3-strike flow

  1. Your check-in interval ends.
  2. We send Signal 1 (gentle reminder).
  3. If you still do not check in, we send Signal 2.
  4. If you still do not check in, we send Signal 3.
  5. Signal 3 is the final notice; if you still do not check in during the signal window, a release begins.

The time between signals is the signal window, set in your settings.

Checking in

Use Safety check-in in the dashboard anytime. A successful check-in:

  • Resets the timer for all vaults.
  • Clears any strikes.
  • Cancels pending signals.

Adjusting the schedule

Go to Settings -> Check-in schedule to update:

  • Interval (days)
  • Signal window (hours)

Changing your schedule resets timers to keep things predictable.

What happens on release

If a release occurs:

  • Beneficiaries are notified by email.
  • Owners receive a confirmation email when releases are created.
  • They can sign in to the release portal to decrypt locally.
  • The "Read this first" note appears first to guide them.
